There will be a PEIFA Scallop Fishing Area 22 General Meeting on Monday, April 27th at 1PM @ O’leary Legion. The PEIFA have invited DFO Resource Management and Conservation & Protection to give an update on the new management measures and answer questions on those measures implicated for 2026. An update on electronic logbook (E-Log) suppliers will also be given.

All scallop fishers in the area encouraged to attend.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Gulf Region, invites you to participate in an upcoming information session regarding the implementation of mandatory Electronic Logbooks (ELOGs) for the 2026 fishing season in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Rock Crab and Scallop fisheries. The information session will be held specifically for rock crab and scallop harvesters who are not familiar with the use of ELOGs.

It will provide an overview of the new requirements, guidance on how to use ELOGs, a review of licence conditions related to electronic reporting, available ELOG support contacts, and the list of approved service providers. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

Good Afternoon, Through on-going engagement , DFO’s Ghost Gear Program is working on the Canadian Ghost Gear Action Plan, which includes regulatory development as a key component. Five action areas have been identified through our previous activities: Risk reduction measures, Ghost gear retrievals, Lost gear reporting, Storage and proper disposal of ghost gear, and Traceability of fishing gear through its lifespan. The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association’s marine biologist, Melanie Giffin, will offer ONE FREE LOBSTER QUALITY AND HANDLING WORKSHOP in July. THE SESSION WILL INCLUDE A DOOR PRIZE, AS WELL AS A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION FROM THE PEIFA. The workshop is FREE and open to ANYONE who handles lobster: harvesters, deckhands, buyers, plant employees, etc.

If you have your deckhands hired already this is a prime opportunity to add to their knowledge base prior to starting work on your vessel. Topics that will be discussed include lobster biology and anatomy, proper handling techniques to reduce stress and therefore mortality, and how to determine the quality of your lobster. 10 am, Wednesday, July 9 th , 2025 – O’Leary Legion
